Coating everything in a layer of ice

Is this an omen of the year ahead?

Or a thorough cleansing to wash away the last miserable remnants of 2020?

Humans are so resilient

I see the well wishes for the year to come

“May this be the best year ever”

“Here’s to your health in the new year”

Are we by nature optimistic?

Or do we say these things to make ourselves feel better?

To convince our self that there is hope

Hope that things will be better this year

Hope that we will be healthy and happy

Hope that each year is better than the last
